The job:
We’re looking for an experienced project manager with a strong technical background to coordinate the efforts of our product development team. You will be the point person to bring product goals and initiatives off of the white board and into detailed specifications and a project plan. As development progresses, you will ensure development resources are optimally allocated and scheduled towards delivering the best product possible.
Proto develops and publishes a desktop Windows application written in C# .NET. You will need to be extremely meticulous and capable of effectively managing all aspects of the product development to get releases out on time. You will work directly with our management and lead developer on a daily basis.
You will be paid a competitive market salary and will also participate in the employee stock option pool.
A front and center requirement: Do you want to work at a startup? Working for a startup is very different from working for an established company, and if you’re unsure that you want to work at a startup... well, this probably isn’t for you. We have no TPS reports, but we also have no company cafeteria. We hope this job description will help you understand where we are, where we’re going, and whether Proto is a good fit for you. You can learn more about our products and our company at
http://www.protosw.com.
The company:
Proto Software was founded in early 2004, has paying customers, and we've successfully released several major revisions to our core product. We're beyond the "bedroom" stage, but still in the "rather sparse office" stage. You will, however, have healthcare and a competitive salary. Proto is currently around 7 people in total. We’re located in Manhattan near Herald
Square.
We use a hybrid agile development methodology, focusing on risk reduction and the realities of uncertainty in the software development process. Experience with similar methodologies (XP, etc.) is preferred.
Who should apply?
Experience: 2+ years of product and project management experience (ideally at a company with excellent development processes) and a strong fundamental basis in CS from a top university. Beyond that, you will be responsible for making dozens of autonomous prioritization, UI detail, and functionality decisions during product development that will influence the final product. So good judgment and the ability to anticipate what users want is extremely important.
Lastly, you should be excited about Proto. Some people see what we’re doing and think, “eh?”. Some see a product that could break new ground like VisiCalc or HyperCard. Some fall in between. But we all feel very passionately about what we’re doing, so at a risk of sounding creepy, you should share that.
If you are not the right person for this job, but think you know the right person – please help out and forward this posting. Thanks!
